Sleep postures are a highly personal thing. The sleeping posture you take, takes a different toll on the side, back, and stomach, and each has a varied effect on individuals.
Many people go to the doctor every year for idiopathic symptoms, which means they don't have an accident or illness but are experiencing discomfort in their shoulder and hip. The majority of the time, our sleeping positions are to blame.
It's a good idea to try to locate the appropriate sleeping posture that relieves tension on your body to alleviate these pains. It may take some time to become used to sleeping in this manner, but it will be well worth it.
According to specialists, there are six sleeping postures that can be harmful to your health.
1. Sleeping on Your Stomach
Sleeping on your stomach is one position that specialists recommend you avoid at all costs. This is regarded as one of the worst sleeping positions. Not only is it harmful for the neck since the head is twisted all night, but it can also be bad for the nerves and cause numbness in the hands.
2. Lying On Your Back And Sleep Apnea Don't Go Together.
This is the best sleeping position to take according to experts because it is believed to reduce shoulder and hip stiffness. If you snore or have sleep apnea, however, you should avoid this position.
Back sleepers are more likely to snore since the throat relaxes while you sleep, and gravity can hinder breathing, making this position risky for people with sleep apnea.
It is recommended that you flex your knees slightly if you sleep on your back to reduce lower back pain.
3. Lying On Your Side With Shoulder Or Hip Problems.
Although sleeping on your side can help you avoid snoring, it's also linked to shoulder and hip pain. If this is your preferred position, switch sides to ease stress. Because sleep partners normally stick to a particular side of the bed, this is a regular problem.
To avoid morning discomfort, try alternating sides every three to four months.
4. Sleeping With Your Arm Beneath Your Head
Although it's a comfortable position to lie in bed, resting with your arm under your head isn't the healthiest way to sleep.
This could put strain on the nerves that run along the length of the arm, causing numbness and tingling, commonly known as dead fish arm.
5. Sleeping With A Twisted Leg To The Side.
Sleeping with a twisted leg to the side rotates the pelvis and lumbar spine, and long periods of time in this position may result in back pain.
6. Sleeping With A Clenched Jaw.
Many people go to bed with their jaw clenched and are completely unaware of it. This is frequently caused by teeth grinding and can lead to dental problems as well as TMJ pain (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction).
If you suspect you're clenching your teeth while sleeping, consult your dentist, who may be able to fit you with a mouth guard.
Because no single sleeping position is ideal for everyone, pay attention to your needs and pick the one that's right for you.
