1) Decide on your definition of success
Achieving success is partly about defining what you mean by it. Are you looking for more money? Greater influence? Learning new skills? Whatever your definition of success, be sure that it’s clear to you before you set off down your chosen path. If you can’t articulate why success is important to you, then how will your behavior reflect that drive? How will others understand and support your pursuit of success if they don’t understand what it means?
2) Work on yourself
It’s impossible to be successful without taking care of yourself. Doing so isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Take care of your body, mind, emotions, spirit and soul—and do whatever you can to reduce stress, says John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market. He adds that even when business is great and life is easy, it’s still important for entrepreneurs to invest in themselves.
3) Find what you love
First, you need to figure out what you love. This isn’t as easy as it seems. While there are thousands of people who would call themselves professional dreamers, not everyone is cut out for life on their own terms. If you’re having trouble deciding what it is that makes your heart sing, don’t be afraid to try different avenues in order to find something that truly fits. Maybe you love cooking; maybe it’s painting or making music or writing or traveling.
4) Set long-term goals
In order to truly succeed in life, it’s important that you set yourself up for long-term success. How can you live your happiest, most successful life today? Take time every day (even if it’s just five minutes) to focus on what you want from tomorrow. Then think about how you’ll achieve these goals tomorrow. Repeat these steps for each day of your life. Before long, you’ll have a detailed plan for achieving success in all areas of your life!
5) Have hobbies
Having fun will reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and connect you with people. You’ll have less time for video games and TV if you have hobbies that take up your spare time. Consider taking up new activities, joining clubs or community groups, learning a new skill like dancing or playing an instrument. Make an effort to enjoy your free time as much as possible.
6) Take time for rest and relaxation
Rest is vital for your physical and mental health, as well as overall happiness. It’s easy to feel overworked in today’s fast-paced world, but taking time out of each day for rest will help keep you happy. And, it’s no coincidence that successful people make time for relaxation every day—they know it helps them achieve their goals!
7) Create a morning routine
A morning routine not only helps you get out of bed but also creates structure that sets you up for an efficient, productive day. Your routine doesn’t have to be extensive or complicated. Just start with what works for you—try jogging on your treadmill while drinking coffee or meditating before checking emails.
8) Surround yourself with people who are successful
The people around you have an incredible effect on your success. Make sure you surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will challenge you, inspire you, and encourage you. Not only can these folks help improve your self-image, but they can also help make sure that you’re heading in the right direction. Surrounding yourself with successful people is a surefire way to achieve success of your own.
9) Stay in control of your emotions (positive self-talk!)
Our emotions are inextricably linked with our thoughts, so if you feel like something will or won’t happen, you’re probably right. Regardless of whether your thoughts are good or bad (I know I can get through today! vs. This is going to be rough. Again.), they can have a big impact on how you feel throughout your day—and over time, how successful you ultimately become.
10) Learn from others
A lot of successful people credit their mentors, so look for someone you admire, sit down with them and ask what they recommend. Be aware that some may not be too eager to spill their secrets though. Take Steve Jobs, for example—he was asked what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg’s shoes. He said: I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders. Yikes!
