What really makes a country advanced technologically? Have you ever wondered why? In this video, we share the top 10 most technologically advanced countries in the world today, right now! 

How? You may ask… Well, we'll begin at the beginning….  You see, a number of countries remained in bad shape after World War II. Things only started to get better from the '80s onwards. During the COLD WAR era, the race to technological breakthroughs transformed our society and culture forever.

 So, it's safe to say, that the competitiveness brought about by industrial revolutions in the world's greatest wars pushed humanity to the modern age we experience today. For technological advancement to work, the heartbeat of a nation lies in its power to bring together its technological expertise, combining both knowledge and skill. 

Today, technological skills are in high demand. As we speak, they are still the most sought after. For example, the supply of skills still does not match the demand in most developing economies. 

A number of countries have contributed to the shape of the modern age, but here are the top 10 that really stand out: 

At number 10, we have Canada.

 The  Canadian government takes an active position - when promoting technological advancement and modern-day research - through various programs. The country is best known for its biotechnology research and space exploration. The government of Canada allocates about 2% of Gross Domestic Product to Research and Development. Their technology companies alone produce $117 billion in GDP, which can go up to $51 trillion combined with an employed workforce of 6%.

 A work environment with stability, supportive government, and constant research continue to rank Canada among the most technologically advanced countries. Did you know there exists a Canadian Silicon Valley in the suburbs of Toronto?

 I bet you didn't!

 The Canadian government has a futuristic outlook, and they have a well-structured plan to expand their biotech industry. They do this through a framework of integrating Research & Development from both the public and private sectors. 

Stay there long enough, and you will find novel health technologies, like stem cell research and nanotechnology at the forefront of the national agenda. 

At number 9 we have the United Kingdom.

 Once upon a time, the British Empire was the most developed country compared to others. In fact, the shift from traditional manufacturing processes to new ones emanated from this country. It was all due to the birth of the Industrial Revolution. 

What's more fascinating? Many basic scientific principles are said to have been discovered in this country. Steam engines, the worldwide web, electrical motors, the jet engine, commercial electric telegraphs, the light bulb, you name it – it was all invented here.

 More recently, the British Empire has created new technologies like the BAE Systems Tarnish Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle. 

More than this, the UK government and businesses are now spending billions of dollars in research and development. They’re doing this to expand public-private partnerships, in order to drive innovations in Biotech. As we speak, the UK has committed a whopping 150 million pounds towards the development of technology in healthcare. 

Britain was once the ruler in this kind of stuff, but today, it counts its losses as younger countries take the lead. 

At number 8, we have Germany.

 You may be aware that the countries' efforts in research and development in the field of nanotechnology and space travel take the lead. So, it's no big surprise that Germany is on our list. Germans are Masters in military technology, engineering, medical science, and infrastructure. The German government is an advocate for education, supporting the preparations of new generations of scientists. They do so through working with many institutions and universities.

 From very early on, the German industry has supported scientific research in the country. These "masterminds" are also active researchers in the disciplines of nanotechnology and space travel. 

The Fraunhofer Society, the Max Planck Society, and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community are research organizations that call Germany home. The German economy and community take pride in their research and development efforts… and guess what? 

They have evidence to support this, with global automotive brands like Mercedes, BMW, and Volkswagen all adding to their technological savvies. 

Next in line, we have Sweden at number 7.

 Sweden's technological growth leads the pack with outstanding achievements in mobile apps and web development. This country was one of only a few that made it through the turbulent financial crisis of 2008. Throughout the bubble burst, they achieved sustained economic growth, mainly due to thriving technology firms. 

Huge tech corporations like Ericsson dominated the market for years. Today, the tables have turned. Other Swedish firms like Torrent, Spotify, and Skype have taken the lead.

 These high-tech giants make use of internet flexibility to increase communication and develop opportunities for exchanging music, information, and ideas. 

At number 6 we have Israel.

 The private sector in Israel has been very fruitful. It produces the world's most advanced weapons. Although it is a small country, Israel is doing miracles when it comes to agricultural innovation. It has manufactured products that maximize the growth of crops, using only half the effort of conventional ways. 

Almost 35% of Israeli exports are related to technology. Today, the country is in the top five economies doing Space Science research.

 Notorious for its defense industry innovations, Israel created the first Unmanned Air Vehicle - one with the ability to monitor any situation in real-time. This nation is one of the few technologically advanced nations to have state-of-the-art electric car infrastructure. They have recharge station networks that are well maintained throughout the country. 

At number 5 we have Japan. 

Japan has a well-established reputation for advanced technologies. Researchers from Japan have made amazing contributions in the field of automotive tech, machinery, electronics, optics, industrial robotics, semiconductors, metallurgy, and earthquake engineering. 

Within Japan, cities like Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Osaka are some of the most technologically advanced. Since 1973, the country has effectively been able to be less dependent on imported fuel. 

Did I mention that Japan is known as the most technologically advanced country in esteemed social circles? When you visit this country, you will find the world's smartest toilets, robotic technologies, and bullet trains. If you’re an explorer, Japan is definitely a treat for the tech enthusiast. And Japan is home to some of the world's biggest technological brands, like Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Sony, and Panasonic, just to name a few. 

At number 4, we have the United States of America.

 It's no secret that the US is one of the biggest economies in the world. It leads the technological development industry, making it a huge global player. 

The sector alone employed about 12 million people in 2020. The US is a superpower for many reasons, but space technology has played a huge role in putting the nation on the map. The US is home to great strides made in science, like the creation of the nuclear bomb, to Neil Armstrong's first landing on the moon. The US continues to be a force to reckon with.

 Today, American technology organizations continue to focus on pharmaceuticals, space exploration, software development, web design, telecommunications, and defense. 

When it comes to military technology, the US is the world's most powerful. Organizations like Raytheon, General Dynamics, and Lockheed Martin, have all played a huge role in making America "great."

 Even more so, the country has created the world's grandest technology firms, such as Apple, Intel, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft. Compared to any other country, American researchers are the biggest publishers in medicine and biology. This impact is noted in the behavior and dominance of large pharmaceutical companies in biology and medicine. 

These innovations in technology allow the companies to reach new levels - and in the process, change people's lives all around the world. 

 

Next in line, we have Switzerland, at number 3.

 According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, Switzerland is the world's most innovative country. Although the country lacks natural industrial resources, the focus of its economy has always been science and technology. This practice is highly supported by its government and its private sector. 

In the category of 'knowledge and technology outputs,' Switzerland has ranked really high consistently. To support my point, I discovered that the Swiss have the highest per capita patent applications in Europe. Stats published by the European Patent Office say they rank third in the world in this regard. 

For example, innovators in Switzerland filed for more than 1,000 patent applications per million people. Compare it to the Netherlands, which only has 416 patent applications per million people.

 

 At number 2, we have Singapore.

 This country has established itself as a leader in the field of technology throughout the region of Southeast Asia. Its technology and science industry is booming as venture capitalists continue to invest in new start-ups. Singaporeans also have the world's fastest average internet speed, giving their citizens a huge advantage. This technological hub of a country puts together scientists, entrepreneurs, and the environment to bring about effective, collaborative, and mind-blowing innovations.

 And now… at number 1… we have South Korea.

 South Korea was one of the world's poorest nations in the 1960s after the Korean War. But today, two things come to mind when someone says South Korea – and they are phones and cars.

 The country has made outstanding progress in its economy and especially in the tech industry. Koreans have most of their achievements in robotics, and in most of their scientific discoveries, their main contender in Japan.
