The Spider-Verse was first teased in April during Marvel Studios' "Secret Empire" panel at Comic-Con. But it was knocked that Marvel Studios had a unique spin on the event.

The trailer begins with Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), the villain behind Spider-Man's greatest fear: He fears spiders. Of course, the iconic story arc is inspired by the Oscorp scientist Doc Ock's obsession with spiders, who turn his hands into metallic appendages, which he uses to bring Spider-Man down. Because obviously. It's been a long time coming, and after a few other attempts, the Doc Ock movie has finally been confirmed. The character, who first debuted in 1978's The Amazing Spider-Man #100, has popped up in various other Marvel storylines and textures throughout the years, but never in a film before.

What Does This Mean For The Future Of Spider-Man?

The trailer makes a big deal out of the fact that Peter Parker goes to college (while the Peter Parker of the Spider-Verse films is still a high school student). This should mean that Spider-Man: Far From Home will start Peter Parker's freshman year in college. I also think it would be pretty cool if Spider-Man: No Way Home picked up with the Miles Morales version of Peter Parker, having become the Ultimate Spider-Man after he's been bitten by the spider. If anything, the story of a young Peter Parker navigating his way through life in college would seem even more relevant given the news that Marvel Studios is developing a separate Spider-Man movie centered around Miles Morales. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and if we're finally getting a new Spider-Man trilogy.

How Does Peter Parker Get His Costume Back?

Sony Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home in January, and it looked like the movie was going to tell Peter Parker's origin story before he got his Spider-Man suit. The new trailer, however, doesn't offer that information. Instead, we see Parker trying to get back his favorite Spider-Man costume. A female voice explains: "We created an entire parallel universe in one mission. Never realized there'd be so many Spider-people in one universe." So, why would Spider-Man be able to have his suit but not have his case back? Perhaps Doc Ock took it after he bonded with Peter's symbiote, meaning the hero was without his iconic spider suit until that suit was restored in the Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credit scene.

What Just Happened?

Sony Pictures had previously said that the Spider-Man universe expansion would be contained to the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequels, but then they released the very first footage from Spider-Man: No Way Home this morning, essentially confirming that there will be several more Spider-Man movies that exist in their proper worlds, with no connections to one another. But the new trailer does tease the existence of several villains that appear to share the same universe. There are two baddies to highlight here, starting with Doc Ock. The first footage showed Peter Parker's mother being attacked by a new villain with tentacles, and the second showed the return of a more classic Spider-Man baddie.
