10 amazing facts about dogs

If we know that all dogs without exception are descended from the wolf or that they sweat in particular thanks to the pads they have under their paws, we are probably still unaware of some crisp or scientific information on these little animals so endearing!

1. Unusual flair

The smell of dogs is simply extraordinary. Where humans have some 5 million sensory sensors, dogs' noses have up to ... 300,000 million! Enough to allow them to smell many smells that escape us and follow tracks for several kilometers.

2. A unique muzzle in the world

Before being identified by tattooing and today by microchips injected under their skin, dogs were identified by ... the imprint of their nose. This one, in fact, is as unique as our fingerprints are. But the method is difficult to implement. It is not easy, in fact, to cover the truffle - previously dried - with a dog of ink and to maintain it while preventing it from licking it while pressing a leaf against its nose.

3. Dogs see life in color

Contrary to popular belief, dogs see the world in color. Colors duller and less diverse than us humans, but they see colors all the same. Their night vision, on the other hand, is much better than ours. And their field of vision is also wider.

4. A surprising skeleton

Dogs do not have a collarbone. So their shoulder blades are not connected to the rest of their skeleton. Enough to offer the animal greater flexibility for the race in particular.

5. A tongue that serves as a spoon

For drinking, dogs have developed an amazing technique. They form a kind of spoon by folding their tongue ... backward. And thus bring the water from their bowl - or the puddle of rain - to their mouths.

6. Sharp ears

The smell is not the only sense that performs well in dogs. So is their hearing. The dog also perceives sounds in a range of frequencies that are inaccessible to us. She perceives sounds emitted up to four times farther away than us. The story goes that Paul McCartney recorded an ultrasonic whistle audible only to dogs at the end of the song A Day in the Life.

7. Ultra-muscular

And there are many shapes and sizes of ears in the dog world: from the erect ears of German Shepherds to the floppy ears of basset hounds. Dogs' ears are also more muscular than ours. On average, they have 18 muscles compared to only 6 for ours. Enough to diversify the non-verbal language of our four-legged friends. Suddenly pricked ears are synonymous with alertness or interest. As for the ears flattened on the head, they mark fear or a desire for submission.

8. Why do dogs go around in circles?

You may have already observed your dog circling before bed. Even who was scratching his cushion. This attitude is a legacy of its wild past. A past in which the dog/wolf had to make sure to create a comfortable place to sleep. The ritual made it possible in particular to hunt snakes and unwanted insects.

9. Blood groups in dogs

In dogs, there are no less than 8 blood groups. But in practice, the typing of the Dog Erythrocyte Antigen 1.1 (DEA 1.1) group is most important. This group indeed presents a great immunogenic power, understand an important power to provoke an immune reaction. Therefore, dogs are essentially classified DEA 1.1+ (universal recipients, approximately 1/3 of dogs) or DEA 1.1- (universal donors, approximately 2/3 of dogs) depending on whether or not they possess DEA 1.1 antigens.

10. Dogs with blue tongues

Like their palate and their lips, most dogs have pink tongues, like humans. Some breeds, however, may exhibit a bluish-toned tongue this is the case with chow-chow, in particular. A Chinese legend says that this color would be inherited from a dog who tried to save his master from a flaming beam that had fallen on him. Scientists suspect an excess of melanin or a deficiency in tyrosine. But beware, in most cases, a blue tongue in dogs is a sign of cyanosis and calls for an emergency veterinary consultation.
