How a solar storm will hit Earth tomorrow; Expect mobile, GPS, satellite jams

SOLAR STORM

A solar flare is an intense-localized eruption of electromagnetic radiation in the Sun's atmosphere.[1] Flares occur in active regions and are often, but not always, accompanied by coronal mass ejections, solar particle events, and other solar phenomena. The occurrence of solar flares varies with the 11-year solar cycle.

Solar flares are thought to occur when stored magnetic energy in the Sun's atmosphere accelerates charged particles in the surrounding plasma. This results in the emission of electromagnetic radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum.

High-energy electromagnetic radiation from solar flares is absorbed by the daylight side of Earth's upper atmosphere, in particular the ionosphere, and does not reach the surface. This absorption can temporarily increase the ionization of the ionosphere, which may interfere with short-wave radio communication. The prediction of solar flares is an active area of research.

Flares also occur on other stars, where the term stellar flare applies.

Terrestrial

X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation emitted by solar flares are absorbed by the daylight side of Earth's atmosphere and do not reach the Earth's surface. Therefore, solar flares pose no direct danger to humans on Earth. However, this absorption of high-energy electromagnetic radiation can temporarily increase the ionization of the upper atmosphere, which can interfere with short-wave radio communication, and can temporarily heat and expand the Earth's outer atmosphere. This expansion can increase drag on satellites in low Earth orbit, which can lead to orbital decay over time.

According to the latest prediction by space meteorologist Dr. Tami ta Ska, the solar storm is expected to hit Earth directly on July 20. Researchers and scientists around the world are on edge because of the possibility of a strong solar flare hitting Earth. On July 15 the radio was reportedly disabled by a massive fire.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that new sunspots expected to appear throughout the week on the Earth-facing solar disk, and solar flares may also occur. These sunspots can create powerful solar flares with X-class maximum impact that can damage GPS, create radio blackouts, or disrupt cell networks.

On July 15, a strong solar flare in our direction disrupted GPS and caused radio blackouts across the planet. Many believed that was the end, but now it appears that a slow-moving Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) ejected from the Sun is heading toward Earth and hitting us.

On July 19, NASA warned that it could have a significant impact on Earth's geomagnetic field.

The agency also warned the public to expect significant radio and GPS signal disruptions on the evening of July 19. A solar flare, defined by NASA, is a powerful burst of radiation that results from the ejection of charged particles from the sun's sunspots. These are referred to as bright spots on the Sun's surface and last for a few hours.

These explosive bursts are usually caused by the emission of photons from the Sun.

Although asteroids have hit Earth, there has been no documented damage. In March 2022 Earth hit by a severe solar storm. A few days later, a G1-class storm made landfall there.

Studies show that the intensity of a geomagnetic storm can be measured on a scale of one to five, with one representing a minor storm and five representing a severe storm. This indicates a strong explosion that disrupts radio and communications in many areas.
